One of my favourite places on the @sailbritain res One of my favourite places on the @sailbritain residency was Coroghan Castle on the isle of Canna.

The only part that remains is a rugged stone built wall, precariously perched on an outcrop of rock above a pebble beach.

It seemed to me like the eccentric creation of a nobleman who had a castle built in the most extreme of locations...but it was so unreachable, he couldn't get to it himself!

When we arrived on Canna, the island was draped in soft cloud and drizzle which added to the atmosphere of the place.

There were some sheep clinging to the slopes above us, occasionally glancing down at us as we scrambled among the stones.

I'm keen to try to capture atmosphere and lighting and determined not to become too neat and tidy!

I love boils and texture in animation. It feels like they capture the constantly shifting light and the movement outside. Lanscapes are very rarely still in Scotland!

Spent a lovely hour wandering amongst the trees in Spent a lovely hour wandering amongst the trees in the Cairgorms NP last weekend.

Loved taking my sketchbook and sketching some of the more unusual tree shapes.

A very windy and varied ride through the Cairngorm A very windy and varied ride through the Cairngorm NP today with the unstoppable @crabtree.sara .

Big stormy skies, purple heather, towering pine trees and brooding mountains.

Gravel tracks, hidden tree roots and battling up hills into strong winds. Phew!

One of my favourite parts of the @sailbritain Life One of my favourite parts of the @sailbritain Life of Islands residency was the day we explored Kilmory Bay on Rum. @laurachops gave us the task of exploring what we could do with a tiny patch of earth.

So it felt fitting that a short distance inland were the remains of an abandoned village. It was quite emotional standing where a community once lived, where now only red deer roam.

The tiny raised graveyard held a few gravestones, lovingly protected from the elements by a low stone wall.

It felt desolate and eerie with only the soft trickling sound of the burn nearby and the occasional bumblebee whizzing round my head.

Some sketches and doodles from the @sailbritain Li Some sketches and doodles from the @sailbritain Life of Islands residency with @laurachops as facilitator.

The first image was done using transfer paper - really enjoyed not being able to see what I was doing and allowing things to overlap and get messy!

Being a bird lover, I really enjoyed watching the seabirds we encountered: flocks of kittiwakes, rafts of shearwaters, pairs of bobbing guilliemots and the diving arrow - headed gannets.

I realised that I was identifying them through behaviour rather than how they looked. This is something I'd love to explore more through animation.

I’ve just returned from the @sailbritain ‘Life I’ve just returned from the @sailbritain ‘Life of Islands’ artist’s residency facilitated by artist and musician @laurachops, aboard the beautiful Merlin.

The residency explored the concept of ‘Islandness’- focusing on the communities, remoteness, connection and identity of each island we visited.

We started in Mallaig and over the week, made our way around the Small isles of Rum, Eigg and Canna as well as exploring Loch Moidart on the Ardnamurchan peninsula.

We had to work as a crew, quite literally learning the ropes. My favourite part of each day was when we motored out of the anchorage, hoisted the sails and switched off the engine. Travelling purely by wind power is magical - the perfect combination of calm and exhilaration.

Highlights of the week:

Being joined by a pod of common dolphins who stayed with us for over half an hour, spinning and leaping out of the water at the bow.

All the artists running into the
sea for a poetry reading on Rum

Delicious evening meals squeezed around the galley table.

Hiking through bogs to see the spectacular Sgurr of Eigg up close.

As we travelled, we worked brilliantly as a crew, thanks to the patience and kindness of skipper Oliver and first-mate Tom. We shared ideas, told stories and explored the uniqueness of each island,
sketching, taking photographs and writing. Laura gave us daily challenges which encouraged us to think differently and try new techniques.

My takeaways from the experience are focused on the different processes and ways we can capture information and ideas as artists. I found myself writing and using words far more than drawing which perhaps shows where my interests lie right now. But, most of all I found that immersing myself deeply into these wild and remote places with a creative mindset, brought about ideas that I would never have had otherwise.

A huge thanks to everyone who made the trip as spectacular as it could be: Sail Britain, Laura and
my fellow artists.

Made possible with the financial assistance of Visual Artists and Craft Maker
Awards: Forth Valley.

I’m also hooked on sailing and can’t wait to get back out onto the water!
